The St. Bernard Project

The St. Bernard Project is a community-based organization that began rebuilding homes in August 2006 that were damaged by floodwaters from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. St. Bernard is a uniquely tight-knit, working class community adjacent to New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward - the area hardest hit by the storms. To date, the St. Bernard Project has rebuilt 131 homes and is currently working on more than 30 others.

The mission of the St. Bernard Project is to remove barriers for families who wish to move back into their homes but do not have enough funds to hire a contractor or pay for building supplies. Using volunteer labor, skilled supervisors and donations for building supplies, it takes on average 12 weeks and $12,000 worth of materials to completely rebuild a house that has been gutted to the studs. The goal over the next 12 months is to rebuild 100 additional homes with help from approximately 4,000 volunteers.
